Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about EnvHub

General

EnvHub is a browser extension that adds visual indicators to your browser tabs so you always know which environment you're working inβ€”Local, Development, Staging, Production, etc. It helps prevent accidental changes to production systems.

Yes! EnvHub is 100% free with no limits on projects, environments, or features. There are no paid tiers, no trials, and no credit card required. We may introduce optional team features in the future, but the core extension will always be free.

EnvHub is designed for web developers, QA engineers, DevOps professionals, Shopify developers, and anyone who works with multiple environments of the same application. If you've ever accidentally made changes to production thinking it was staging, EnvHub is for you.

No. EnvHub works entirely locally without any account or sign-up. Just install and start using it immediately.

Installation

EnvHub works on all Chromium-based browsers including Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi. Firefox support is planned for a future release.

Visit the Chrome Web Store, search for "EnvHub", and click "Add to Chrome". The extension will install automatically. You can also click the "Install Free" button on this website to go directly to the store listing.

EnvHub requests permission to access websites so it can display the environment indicator. We only inject the indicator on sites you've configuredβ€”never on other sites. We don't read your data, track your browsing, or access anything beyond what's needed to show the indicator.

Yes! EnvHub is built from the ground up on Manifest V3, Chrome's latest extension platform. This means it's future-proof and will continue working as Chrome phases out older extensions.

Features

There are no limits! Create as many projects and environments as you need. EnvHub stores everything locally in your browser without any restrictions.

EnvHub offers four display modes: Bar (full-width bar at any edge), Frame (colored border around the viewport), Ribbon (corner ribbon like a "Beta" label), and Label (floating badge). Each can be positioned and customized to your liking.

Yes! Toggle the regex mode (.*) when adding an environment to use full JavaScript regular expressions for complex URL patterns. You can also use simple wildcard patterns with * for most use cases.

Absolutely! Use the Export feature to download your configuration as a JSON file, then share it with your team. They can import it into their EnvHub installation to have the same project setup instantly.

Yes! EnvHub has special Shopify integration that can detect preview theme URLs and display the theme name. This is especially useful for Shopify developers working with multiple theme versions.

Privacy & Security

No. EnvHub is 100% local. All your projects, environments, and settings are stored in your browser's local storage. Nothing is ever sent to our servers or any third party. We don't even have servers to receive data.

No. EnvHub has no analytics, no tracking, and no telemetry. We don't know what sites you visit, what you configure, or how you use the extension. Your privacy is completely protected.

EnvHub uses Chrome's sync storage, which means your settings can sync across devices where you're signed into the same Chrome profile. This sync happens through Chrome's built-in sync systemβ€”we never see or access this data. You can use Export/Import for manual transfers.

The extension code is readable in your browser's extension directory. We believe in transparency and have nothing to hide.

Troubleshooting

Check these common issues:

  • Make sure EnvHub is enabled (check the toggle in the popup)
  • Verify the URL in your environment matches the current page
  • Refresh the page after making configuration changes
  • Check if the environment is enabled (not toggled off)
  • Make sure EnvHub has permission to access the site

Try these solutions: Change the display mode to something less intrusive (like Label), adjust the position, reduce the size, lower the opacity, or enable "Push content" mode which moves the page content instead of overlaying it.

This can happen if Chrome clears extension storage. We recommend regularly exporting your configuration as a backup. If you have Chrome sync enabled, your settings should restore once sync catches up.

Yes! Use the keyboard shortcut (Alt+E by default) to quickly toggle the indicator on/off. You can also toggle individual environments or the entire extension from the popup.

We'd love to hear from you! Send an email to support@envhub.dev with a description of the bug or feature request. Please include your browser version and steps to reproduce any issues.
